There is nothing better than a pre-sunrise endorphin rush. My 5 and 6 a.m. workouts let me get out my “utz” before dealing with anything or anybody. At one point, Mr. Dottie actually confiscated my iPhone until after my workouts in order to eradicate my early morning tendencies toward sending scathing emails to all those who have done me wrong.  I am an expert at sending brilliantly composed, insanely evil messages  to those who absolutely deserve it. However, I generally only have the chutzpah for true genius first thing in the morning.

Anywho, in addition to staving off my evil twin, a daybreak workout also starts my day with an immediate feeling of gratification. No matter what else I may F up the rest of the day, I know I have accomplished at least one positive thing from the get go. Honestly, any aesthetic rewards are just a bonus. Let’s create a meditative visual for inspiration:

1) Imagine walking into a dimly lit room, infused with the palpable energy of similarly disciplined, motivated, strong people. Maybe even a very lightly scented candle.

2) Add your favorite beat. Is it “Shake it Out” by Florence and The Machine? Perhaps it’s “Your Body” by Christina Aguilera? Or maybe “Get it Poppin'” by Fat Joe and Nelly?

3) Pin your hair up with two old fashioned bobby pins in the front and an 80’s clip in the back in order to preserve your blow out.

4) Loosen the cap on your water bottle because you are about to take in a whole liter before even starting your day.

5) Take a discrete peek in the mirror to admire you for showing up so early and looking good.

6) You are ready to rock!

I am currently a huge fan of both Barry’s Bootcamp and SoulCycle. They respect you just for the commitment of being there before sunrise. Then, they beat the flagernoggin out of you for an hour. A wise friend once told me: the best workout for you is the one you will actually show up for. Hence, commit to any physical exercise you enjoy even a little bit and make it a priority. None of us really has time; we need to create it as this may be the only hour of the day that is all about YOU…well, unless you are ME.
