I have been in so many cities since we last convened that I am not sure whether I am coming or going. Perhaps a little bit of both, but that is neither here nor there. Really, just thinking summer should be the time for reflection and introspection. There is no better way to accomplish this goal than to take a good look in the mirror. “Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who’s the fairest of them all?” What does that question mean, anywho? Many a scholar has analyzed this one and, in our time of political correctness, come up with an entertaining variety of issues. I can’t even go there, so let’s just explore art with mirrors. There are so many fabulous ones, as many well-regarded, museum-quality artists are working in mirrors. Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian, Ori Gersht, Doug Aitken, Nick Mauss, Arik Levy, and Jeppe Hein are merely a handful of artists who have exhibited in the medium lately. And, of course, we can’t forget designers like Misha Kahn, Christophe Côme, and Hervé Van der Straeten. Let’s take a look (no pun intended) at them all.
