I would never wrap myself in an American flag, but I do think we should acknowledge Flag Day. It is sort of a sad state of things when everyone goes nuts over National Donut Day on Instagram but almost completely ignores Flag Day. For G-d’s sake, stop the madness, please. It inspired my entire theme this week. Is it because I am, in my heart of hearts, still a Philly girl? I mean, now that I think about it, I was Betsy Ross for Halloween in kindergarten. I thought I was something else, and even carried an authentic embroidery hoop with an American flag in it. However, that whole night came to a crashing, emotional halt when a teenage boy opened the door and responded to my “Trick or treat!” with, “Who are you with those glasses, Elton John?” Was it so wrong that my version of Betsy wore huge groovy glasses instead of the Ben Franklin type? Perhaps that was my first clue that I wasn’t meant to spend my adulthood in such a provincial town. Payback to Fred (that was the boy’s name): Chic collectistas all over the world now live for my groovy-glasses collection. But I digress…. The important matter here is that Flag Day and the week following are all about being patriotic. Hence, let’s shop for some red, white, and blue fashion, visit Philly, explore art and American presidents, American design, and art and flags.
