It is hard to believe we are again approaching the most fashionable time of year in the art world: the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Gala. This year’s theme, China: Through the Looking Glass, has me a bit perplexed. Yes, I get the focus on the influence of Chinese aesthetics on Western fashion. But Through the Looking-Glass is the sequel to Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. What’s up with that? Will the Jabberwock be at the gala? Who knows, but I think we shouldn’t lose sleep over this—just felt compelled to put it out there. In the meantime, I have become slightly fixated upon how all art has influenced fashion. Hence, this week, I visited my personal Asian fashion influences, Mickalene Thomas, Maria Brito, Bjarne Melgaard, and even created my own virtual fashionable art gallery. As you read on, always remember, “Fashion fades, style is eternal” (Yves Saint Laurent). How that applies here, I am not sure.
