You may recall when I was searching for fall and winter haute hats, I discovered Gladys Tamez Millinery at Ron Robinson. I finally had a chance to hang out with this extraordinary milliner at her studio and, well, I take off my hat to this artist.
Gladys was born in Mexico to a bullfighting family. She had been a clothing designer when she traveled to Spain and met a fourth-generation hatmaker. This pro became her mentor. After honing her skills, Gladys was introduced to Armando, a custom hat blocker. Armando had previously crafted hats for personalities like Indiana Jones and Michael Jackson. Blocking is what makes the actual shape of a hat; many hats are mass-produced by machine blocking. Gladys will have none of this! Each Gladys Tamez design is hand blocked by Armando—hence, the reason they are so divinely comfortable and chic. Gladys Tamez’s very first client was designer Thomas Wylde. Now, five years later, her haute hats are available at luxury boutiques worldwide such as Fred Segal, Maxfield, Curve, and Louisa via Roma. All custom work is completed on-site, everything is made to order, and one-of-a-kind custom designs are by appointment only. I turned into a total, real-life mad hatter as I ran around her factory trying on fall 2015 designs. I finally settled on a Taurus hat from the Zodiac collection. If I may say so myself, I rock the look. Learn more about Gladys in our download.
