A proper collectista guest must never, ever arrive at anyone’s home empty-handed. Growing up, my family didn’t have a beach house. However, I must have been a very resourceful kid, as I never missed a Memorial or Labor Day at someone’s amazing beach home. As a result, I became an expert at summer-house hostess gifts. Hey…maybe that was the reason I was invited back season after season. Anyway, now I have the luxurious benefit of paying it forward. My beach house slightly resembles a hotel with our check-in and checkout schedule each summer. One never knows how many “best friends” she has until she has a vacation home. While I am genuine when I say, “Just bring yourself,” the thoughtful gifts never go unappreciated. Hence, here are my favorites that you can grab before visiting your friends this August and surely keep the invites coming your way!

Côte Shop Signature Candles, $28

Côte Shop Signature Candles, $28

Côte Shop Signature Candles
Candles sound trite but hear me out…I am extremely picky about candles. I have discovered certain scents trigger my migraines. Furthermore, some candles smell fabulous in the container, but the scent either doesn’t permeate the room OR is obnoxiously strong and totally attacks all who enter its orbit. Further, many burn black wicks and the container itself becomes smoky and high maintenance. Côte’s custom-scented candle greets you with lemon and sea grass accord. Then the theme shifts to a marine, with mild notes of honeysuckle, sea daffodils, and wild rose. All the notes are supported on a base of driftwood and ambergris with a strong musk mélange. The Côte candle has a 45-hour burn time and a clean-burning cotton wick, and is hand-poured in Los Angeles. Owners Leah Yari and Mary Lennon spent endless time concocting the perfect “branded” Malibu-meets-South-of-France scent to complement any beach environment. It is so fresh you can even bust it out in the city. When you are merely longing for the beach, just light your Côte candle, close your eyes, and away you go! The girls at Côte can also assist you in putting together a whole beach basket or bag for your weekend hosts!

Aerin Gold Match Striker

Aerin Gold Match Striker, $190

Aerin Match Striker
I don’t know about you, but I am often challenged when lighting matches. Though this activity shouldn’t be rocket science for a mature adult, I am still afraid of burning myself and my matches constantly blow out in summer breezes before reaching their illuminating destinations. Hence, I was excited to discover Aerin’s gold match striker in her Southampton shop last summer. It is an elegant, traditional concept re-imagined in a modern way (so very Aerin Lauder). A match striker is one of those gifts I would never buy for myself, but would love to receive. I suspect any hostess would feel the same way about the matter.

Aerin Gold Wine Stoppers, $75 each

Aerin Gold Wine Stoppers, $75 each

Wine Stoppers
A wine stopper is another pragmatic yet luxurious hostess gift. How often do you not finish a fabulous bottle of wine and then fight to stuff the cork back in? The whole thing is so not elegant or refined. Moreover, it looks like shite when you go to serve it again. For whatever reason, I never invest in beautiful wine stoppers and only rely on my Rabbit. My suspicion is most hostesses carry on in the same manner. My preferred wine stoppers are the Gold Sphere Wine Stopper at Aerin or a selection of gorgeous vintage options at TableArt in Los Angeles.

A Touch of Lace Monogrammed Cutting Board

A Touch of Lace Monogrammed Cutting Board, $34-$85

Monogrammed Cutting Boards
I don’t even cook but LOVE delegating and having all the best culinary tools at my fingertips when doing so. In a world where hostesses have multiple monogrammed towels, cups, and ice buckets (not to sound unappreciative—they are all fabulous, but everyone is having the same idea these days), a monogrammed cutting board is something a little different. You can get the best cutting board with dependable turnaround at The Monogram Shop in East Hampton or at A Touch of Lace.

A Touch of Lace Eco Luxury Original Trio Soap Set, $34

A Touch of Lace Eco Luxury Original Trio Soap Set, $34

Monogrammed and Personalized Soaps
Years ago, a European collectista said one should never give soap as a gift because it suggests the recipient needs to use it. I will admit, I did once utilize that tactic with a wonderful employee whose body odor was intolerable. However, generally speaking, I love the idea of giving and receiving personalized and wonderfully scented soaps. They are perfect for powder rooms and, sometimes, the packaging is even more exciting than the soap itself—that’s okay! I would love to receive any of the Eco Luxury Soap sets and combinations from A Touch of Lace or, if you are passing through Barcelona, colorful confetti soap from Sabater Hermanos is the best.

Comerford Collection Wood Ring Tray, $312

Comerford Collection Wood Ring Tray, $312

Wooden Bowls and Trays
I am a total sucker for serving pieces crafted of organic materials—especially in a summer home. Wooden accessories feel personal but are totally neutral. They can work in a traditional or contemporary beach house. Don’t tell anyone you heard it from me, but this is the sort of gift you can stock up on in advance of summer parties and weekend visits. Fabulous teak, oak, and walnut table accessories come at a variety of price points and the best ones are available at Comerford and TableArt.

When choosing a gift for the host and hostess who have everything, you can never go wrong with something sensational for their dog. Turpan Laguiole Florescent Acrylic Sommelier, $390

Laguiole Fluorescent Acrylic Sommelier, $390

Laguiole Fluorescent Acrylic Sommelier
Who doesn’t need a fabulous, fluorescent wine opener? Truth be told, I am a disaster with traditional wine openers, but I could learn to love the Laguiole Acrylic Sommelier because it’s just so chic. Shame I didn’t have this little number when I waited tables in college. Every time a professor ordered a bottle of wine, I panicked and prayed a career server would make himself available to open it for me.

Turpan Pan, $1000 for Silver Lining, $650 for Tin Lining

Handcrafted Copper Pan with Silver Lining (for real!)
The best gifts are those that show you have really considered the recipient’s interests and hobbies. How perfect is this handcrafted copper pan with silver lining and cast-iron handle for your favorite cook? Well, with its generous price tag, hopefully your favorite cook is also your very best friend. If not, this Rhode Island artist makes the same pan with tin lining for half the price. Though it doesn’t sound as fun, it looks virtually identical.

A Touch of Lace Robes

A Touch of Lace Monogrammed Spa Robes, $50

Monogrammed Couples Robes
Let’s face it, there is a reason why they call it a “hostess” gift. Mr. Dottie has often commented, why don’t any guests bring soccer balls or tennis equipment as a gift? Duh! Couples robes are a perfect way to make everyone feel appreciated. These luxurious, lightweight spa robes from A Touch of Lace are practical and personal. They take a little advance thought and planning, as there is about a two-week turnaround on the monogram. However, they are worth the wait. And you can even ship them directly to your hosts. One less thing to carry on your jaunt.

Shellfish Shucking Glove

I really prefer to give gifts that people will embrace but would likely never purchase for themselves. Hence, I was losing my mind over this Jangeorge stainless steel oyster shucking glove that I discovered while bopping around Sag Harbor, New York. What a perfect gift for a beach house!
