If ever there was a doyenne of fashion friends, Dawn Klohs is she! First, I must share that when I told Dawn I would be visiting A’maree’s her immediate response was, “What time? I will prepare lunch for you.” Need I say more? A’maree’s is not just a boutique — it is a finely-curated experience.

A’maree’s is housed in a 1960’s Ladd and Kelsey landmark building in Newport Beach. The exquisite space was designed by Dawn and her sister Denise with the help of architect Paul Davis and interior designer John Wooden. It is located just across from Lido Island with a magnificent deck overlooking the water which offers unparalleled views. It is here, lounging on the wooden furniture and Tulum hammock, that clients are treated to local eats and the house cocktail: a mix of fresh-squeezed pamplemousse, Saint Germain, and Grey Goose. The space itself is a destination. It was originally the Stuft Shirt Restaurant, then became a Mexican restaurant, and is now a shopping Mecca featuring a meticulously edited selection of 125 worldly designers, many of which are exclusive to A’maree’s. These global artists include: custom jewelry designer Alan Faye, Baja East, The Row, Brock, Arts and Science, Sydney Garber, and Dosa. Dawn and her sisters, April and Denise, nurture their designers and even have a bedroom, bath, and kitchen for them to stay over when they are in town.

A’maree’s is a true family business and their mother was a special mentor. The sisters often joined her on her buying trips and played in the store as little girls. They even grew up merchandising and creating displays. Dawn says the success is all about their integrity. The sisters only sell designers they believe in, and strive to make the A’maree’s experience unique. All I know is my visit to A’maree’s was my best “work” day ever. Konstantin Kakanias challenged me to walk out without purchasing anything. I failed miserably. Further, I was there for five hours eating, drinking, mingling and reading The Birthday Book, with sophisticated clients and friends visiting from destinations as far away as Cambodia. When I left, I immediately told Mr. Dottie that we must relocate to Newport Beach so that I can spend every day with Dawn at A’maree’s. It is a fashion institution like no other. I encourage you to make a special trip to A’maree’s — you won’t be disappointed.

WHAT IS YOUR PROCESS?
It’s an organic process…very intuitional. We truly must believe in what we buy. How much we love it is our main focus. A lot is about presentation — how a designer has edited their collection and created their installation. Also, considering our clientele and knowing our location, its demographic. And, of course, recognizing our inner voice in our hearts from doing this for so many years. “When you know…you know.”

WHAT DO YOU COLLECT?
Talented and interesting people, without them we wouldn’t have this beautiful platform to share and thrive from.

WHAT IS YOUR THEME SONG?
“Happy” by Pharrell, because right now is all about being happy for me.

WHO IS THE PERSON WHO INSPIRES YOU MOST?
My mother because of her positiveness, healthy way of living, strength, and outlook on life.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PHILANTHROPIC CAUSE?
Rescuing dogs has been a big part of my life. I love giving animals a second chance for a new life.
